Book Review: Red Rover Red Rover

Red Rover Red Rover

Contemporary Spy Comedy

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Okay, I have this long spiel about spy books. I love 'em but I hate 'em. I love 'em cause there's nothing like a good spy book. There's just something about the mystery and thrill and action that comes with it. I hate 'em cause... ugh, it's so hard to find decent, clean ones! Action content and minor violence aside, most of them are just inappropriate! Um, no thank you.

So imagine my delight when I stumbled upon—okay, was pushed, prompted and dragged towards—Emily Abbot! One—It's so stinking fun. Two—it's clean! Three—the concept is just so cool. If you've been hearing about this series and debating whether to give it a try or not, allow me to help you make up your mind...

Plot

The Accidental Cases of Emily Abbot are a novella series, so the plot is on the shorter side. But does that mean it's rushed or lacking? Not a chance. It comes out of the gate with a problem and leaves with a "wait, I need more!" Not overly complicated, but not yawn-inducing either.

Characters

Emily was one fun character. She wasn't necessarily deep or captivating, but there is that note of relatability which only grows as the series goes on. She's also observant, which seems to be the common trait amongst spies. I mean, she's not a spy, but it sure comes in handy. 😉

Brent has to be my favorite. That laid-back, clueless-at-coffee guy look really suits his character. role. And, c'mon. A spy posing as a barista? This dude totally nails it. He's also a tad protective, which is funny. But in a totally spy-cool way. *Slips sunglasses on*

Romance

There's obviously a thread here that the author continues to pursue throughout the series, but seeing as how they just met... Yeah, it's kept on a friendship-level basis. No content or inappropriate behavior here, folks.

Content Labels

Okee here, most of this is just typical spy stuff: car chase, SPOILER *fake fire evacuation with real fake fire, AKA smoke bombs*, a kidnapping/abduction of a certain character, and SPOILER *and... a car blowing up.* Also mention but not description of someone possibly killing another (spy secret related), and a bullet wound—mention and treatment of, but brief. (To see spoilers, highlight the redacted portions like you're going to copy them 😉)

Final Note

If you ever find yourself with a smidge of time on your hands and you're feeling particularly spy-ish, pick up this book. Then get out your credit card, cause you won't want to stop there. This series has eight and counting. No, literally. I'm counting on #9 coning out. What is it with spy writers and their cliffhangers?! It's like romance authors and their triangles. You can't separate 'em. *Sighs* At least it's working, cause I'm sitting here. Waiting for the next installment. Soooo patient.
